[DD] A great Scientist to remember

Today [30th November] its the birth anniversary of Jagdish Chandra Bose one of the greatest physicist, biologist India ever had. It is an honor for us to know him and remember him this day. Bose is one of the persons in scientific fraternity who had got the credit he deserved. This article I write to show a glimpse of what he did. And there is a plenty of literature available on him which you can read and feel amazed.

The invisible physicist

We have been taught since our early childhood “ Radio was invented by Marconi”, but this man from a country which was under colonial rule then, had demonstrated Maxwell's electromagnetic waves even before that invention was made. Called the iron coherer then, Bose used this device and rung a bell, ignited gun powder from a distance and demonstrated wireless transmission. Driven by his own principles, he declared that he would never patent his inventions and science should be available for others without barriers. And this is not just Indians boasting about their physicist, IEEE The institute of electrical and electronics engineers has given this man credit for his inventions.

Just not this, Bose was the first person to demonstrate semiconductor receivers for radio waves. This time under compulsion from his friends, he patented his work the galena receiver.

The Passionate botanist

As I said Bose is not just a physicist, his later part in life he spent with plants. His interesting hypothesis even non living things as metals respond to external stimulus such as heat, chemicals, mechanical stress in a fashion similar to plants and animals, as in they also show response such as bending upon subjection to heat. He performed various experiments on plants and devised various instruments himself for his experiments which could measure minute changes in the plant's characteristics upon application of external stimuli. Through his experiments he proved plants have feelings similar to animals, i.e they respond positively to positive emotions, and show deterioration when undesirable elements are added to their environment. And today we talk about climate change, implications on plants, environment we live. We are worried pollution, the chemicals we dump on earth is just not affecting us but the entire ecosystem. A pioneer he is. May be he lived ahead of his times to be understood.

Above all these this man communicated and shared his knowledge with all so that it does not die with him. He started Bose institute in Calcutta, the first of its kind research institute in India. He was a writer as well. His work Runaway cyclone was one of the earliest in the genre of science fiction in Bengali.

I am glad that I write this tribute on the great man who laid foundations for wireless telegraphy, cybernetics and chrono-biology and what not more tizzy terms you can add.
