Faraday's Shield

After the Latest Kamal Hassan starrer Tamil movie Vishwaroopam, this term has caught the ears and brains of everyone, atleast my fellow tamil people. Here's the technical aspect of it lay terms:

As the name goes it is a shield.

• Next question what it shields? - Any static Electric field, even electromagnetic waves.

• Working mechanism? - 

• Any electric conductor in the form of mesh, cage, shell has the unique ability to act as a shield against electric fields. It does so as it picks up any electric charge inside the enclosed area and distributes it on the exterior and the result the net charge inside the shield is zero.Also blocks any further entry of electric fields, electro magnetic waves inside.

• And this is not an altogether new concept for movies. Have you seen the Nicolas cage starrer Sorcerer's Apprentice where in the hero Jay Baruchel takes his girlfriend inside a metal cage and plays music on to her using Tesla coils and you see sparks around them yet they are unharmed. It is the iron cage that acts as a shield and is commonly put to us in case of large equipment to prevent them from lightning etc.

•  Applications?

• HaHaHa.... Outwit any cruel intents like detonating a bomb by cell phone trigger as shown in the film.
• Your car, airplanes act  as lightning shields only on based on this mechanism.
• Hospitals make use of this idea in their diagnostic instruments like MRIs where shielding from external interference needed.
• Microwave ovens prevent leakage of needed microwaves used for cooking using Faraday's help.
• Even in cases of cyber security if you need to seal your signals within a premise can be done, used in defence purposes.
